The Hammarby Sports Assocation was founded in 1897 to provide recreation and sports for the working classes and currently fields teams in sports as diverse as boxing, handball, and rowing. But its most notable team is Hammarby Fotboll, which won its first Swedish Championship in 2001 and its first European title in 2007, the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

The team plays in Söderstation in Stockholm which holds nearly 14,000, but when Hammarby participates in one of the European Cups or when the opponents are cross-town rivals AIK or Djurgarden, they fill the 35,000-seat National Stadium.

Hammarby boasts one of the largest fan communities in Sweden, and plans for the construction of a new stadium with larger capacity have been developed, as a result of the team's success.
